Approximately fifty vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Cars, walls and postboxes were marked, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they reported in a statement.
Police state they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored liquid.
The liquid had been placed in the form of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Officers then located many other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under laws outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Police say initial examinations show the fluid was likely human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no lead as to its origin; investigators are currently not cognizant of any physical harm in association with the event," they added.
Municipal representatives stated they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for tips.
A high-ranking representative said the incident made him speechless and had to be addressed quickly.
"This act affects the very heart of Hanau and reopens the pain of the far-right terrorist attack five years ago," he wrote on a platform, mentioning the death of nine victims by a assailant focusing on people of immigrant origin in February 2020.
