Lackluster Oracle Earnings Report Wipe More Than $70bn Off Market Value, Fueling AI Bubble Fears.

The tech firm's disappointing quarterly results have wiped over $70 billion from the worth of the enterprise software company co-founded by Trump ally Larry Ellison, heightening escalating fears of a speculative bubble in AI-related stocks.

Sharp Stock Drop Follows Sales Miss

Stock in the company tumbled by eleven and a half percent in after-hours trading after it reported a disappointing 14% increase in revenues to $16bn in the most recent quarter, as it simultaneously announced plans to ramp up its AI spending by around $15bn.

The enterprise recorded disappointing three-month sales for the period ending in November, with sales at its core cloud computing business growing at a slower pace than projected, at 34 percent.

Market Concerns Over Investment and Debt

Investors were further let down by a more moderate sixty-eight percent increase in income from its cloud infrastructure unit.

At the same time, the market were spooked by the company's increased projections for spending on artificial intelligence. It now projects capex to surge by 40 percent to $50bn, with the vast majority of the additional spending allocated for expanding data centres.

This heavy spending plan comes amid a ballooning debt load, with Oracle's long-term debt having increased by 25 percent over the past year to reach $99.9bn.

"Frankly, the report was not dramatically bad, but it came to reinforce concerns around heavy AI spending, financed by debt, with an uncertain timeframe for returns," commented a senior analyst.

Wider Sector Implications and Industry Risks

Continued exuberance about the capabilities of AI technology has driven a leap in stock prices in recent months, but there has been a growing spate of cautions from regulators and executives who warn stock market valuations could correct sharply if the market become let down by the development or commercial uptake of AI technology.

While Oracle has become an important technology provider developing enterprise solutions for major firms worldwide and has more recently found strength in cloud computing, there are increasing concerns about how reliant tech giants are growing on circular funding within the artificial intelligence industry.

Oracle reported that its metric of revenue from customer contracts soared by 440 percent over the last twelve months. However, market watchers were cautious when it emerged that these commitments were driven by new commitments from major customers like Meta and Amazon.

"While these are two solid customers, it will not allay concerns that the tech sector's AI investments are becoming circular, which leaves it vulnerable to a loss of investor confidence," observed a market strategist.

"In summary, robust contract growth was not enough to calm fears about AI and the huge amount of capital expenditure needed by companies to develop AI capacity."

Broader Sell-Off in AI-Related Stocks

Other technology stocks also declined in after-hours trading following the Oracle report. Key performers included:

  • Nvidia: Share price fell by 1.3 percent.
  • Alphabet (Google): Shares declined by 0.3%.
  • SoftBank: In Japan, the AI investor shares plunged by 7.7 percent on Thursday.
