Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
