RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, located using surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - also known as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were a great many UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, highlights how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it called a "major assault" against IS targets in Syria, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
